Mission Statement of Special Olympics International
"The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community."
This page is intended for people who have not previously registered with Special Olympics Ontario ( SOO ). We recommend that you read to the bottom of this page.
To Participate or Volunteer
To Volunteer or Participate in Oakville you or your athlete will need to be registered with SOO, then enrolled in the Club or Program you wish to join. The gateway to register may be found by clicking on Get Involved at the top of the SOO Home Page
It is recommended that you also contact the clubs directly that you wish to join.
Volunteering
You must be 14 years or older to volunteer. If you are 18 or older you will also need to submit a Police Vulnerable Sector Check done in the area in which you live. There will be a charge, please keep the receipt as you can be reimbursed for the cost.
If you live in Halton you may now submit a request for this police check online .
Please note that the chosen club receives no notificaton of this, so please contact the club directly.
If a club is not displayed in the search results it is not currently available for you to enroll in. If there are no clubs displayed it is still worth contacting a club. Near the end of a season clubs may be closed for self-enrollment, and the next season may not yet be available.
Athletes
If the athlete is under the age of 18 registration must be done by a parent or legal guardian, otherwise an athlete may submit their own registration. In addition, a parent or guardian may choose to become a Family Admin to manage their athlete by submitting this form to become a Family Administrator , after which you will receive further instructions from SOO.
For athletes in group homes a Group Home Admin may be registered to manage residents. A member of the staff will need to submit this form to become a Group Home Administrator . Once processed you will receive further instructions from SOO.
The SOC Portal
This portal was developed and distributed by Special Olympics Canada ( SOC ) for managing members information and enrollments in the SOC database. In the process of registering with SOO you will also become registered on this portal, and as much as possible be responsible for submitting enrollment requests and maintaining your profile. The information in your profile includes contact and medical information. In the case of athletes the medical information must be complete and be kept up to date.
Since its introduction the portal has gone through some improvements but you may find it less then intuitive so please be patient. For more information please see Using the Special Olympica Canada Membership Portal
